Focus of the medicine and health science degree programs

Focusing on people - with different perspectives:

Occupational Therapy / Speech Therapy

The Bachelor's degree course in Occupational Therapy/Logopaedics (B.Sc.) requires completed vocational training. While speech therapy deals with the diagnosis and treatment of voice, speech, language and swallowing disorders, occupational therapy focuses on restoring, improving and maintaining independence and the ability to act in everyday situations. The part-time course expands professional skills with scientifically sound, theory-based knowledge and lays the foundations for evidence-based practice.

Physiotherapy

The physiotherapy degree program teaches you the knowledge and skills to enable people to lead an active life. The aim is to mobilize patients after injuries, promote their development or support them in dealing with illnesses. You work with people to develop ways to achieve individual goals. Physiotherapy includes targeted exercises, optimal training and the transfer of scientifically based knowledge.

Midwifery science

The Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science prepares you for a responsible job in the care of women and families during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. You will acquire sound knowledge in the areas of obstetrics, health promotion and counseling as well as evidence-based practice. The degree program enables you to work independently as a midwife in clinics and freelance work, as well as in a variety of health-promoting areas.

Health and health care sciences

In the Master's degree course in Health and Healthcare Sciences, we combine health sciences, healthcare research and informatics. Together with students from various healthcare professions, you will learn how to develop, implement and evaluate innovative solutions for healthcare. The Master's degree opens up career opportunities in healthcare as well as prospects for an academic career.

Dual Nursing

In the dual Bachelor's degree course in Nursing, students are prepared for the diverse range of tasks of a university-trained nursing professional - in the care of newborns as well as in end-of-life care. They learn to provide scientifically sound support to people at risk in hospital or in long-term care and to take on extended tasks in guidance, advice and training as well as in prevention and care management.

Applied nursing science

Students on the part-time Applied Nursing Science course expand their professional knowledge and acquire additional skills for the evidence-based care of people with particularly complex needs. For example, they are prepared to support those affected and their families in important medical and nursing decisions, to participate in the development of innovative care services or to instruct students in nursing.

Medicine

The medical degree program prepares students for the medical profession by imparting scientific knowledge and practicing clinical, practical and communication skills. In addition to the specialist studies, attitudes and approaches should be internalized: Because only with an empathetic basic attitude, appreciative interprofessional cooperation and a mindful view of oneself and others, can the well-being of patients be the focus of medical, therapeutic and nursing activities. Our guiding principles for medical studies in Lübeck are therefore patient safety - healthy studies - specialist studies plus!

Impressions from the study programs

Interprofessionalization

Interprofessionalization is a central component of the Department of Medicine at the University of Lübeck. The "health sciences under one roof" program, which is unique in Germany, enables a close integration of theory and practice as well as a holistic education. As early as the second semester, all students develop common ideas and guiding principles for teamwork at the 'Interprofessional Day' - including, for example, 'Many hands - good endings' from the year 2024.

Joint teaching strengthens mutual respect, improves teamwork and optimally prepares students for cooperative patient care. Learning together means working better together - for a higher quality of treatment, greater patient safety and satisfaction in the healthcare sector.

Current research projects in the health sciences

Nursing coaching for stroke patients

In StrokeCompass, a nursing-led, interprofessional intervention was developed to support joint decision-making and adherence in the prevention of stroke recurrence with medication. We are currently investigating its feasibility in seven clinics with 452 patients. All project steps are being implemented on a multi-professional basis and together with a representative body for those affected.

Breaks in the birth process

One focus in the Department of Midwifery Science is on healthy (physiological) birth. The research program "Physiological plateaus and birth rhythms", which deals with pauses in the birth process, is also anchored here. The program includes innovative studies, international cooperation and the promotion of young scientists www.childbirthresearch.com

Opinions of students

Every professional group tends to stay in their bubble and I notice this even more with students. The fact that you work with different departments here makes the work more interesting, but also the breaks

The interprofessional exchange within the events was very positive and the role presentations in particular were enriching
