Doctoral candidates can be employed at the University of Lübeck. In most cases, a fixed-term employment contract is concluded as a research assistant and social security entitlements are acquired. In such a case, the fixed-term regulations of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG) apply, i.e. academic staff can be employed at the university for a maximum of 6 years for the purpose of their doctorate. Under certain circumstances, this period may be extended, for example for parents of children under the age of 18 or people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
The doctoral scholarship provides doctoral researchers with a livelihood and the opportunity to conduct independent research.
A large number of organizations and foundations provide financial and non-material support for doctoral researchers.
A scholarship is not an employment subject to social security contributions and doctoral researchers must take out their own health insurance. Some scholarship providers also have limits on working hours and additional earnings, which must be taken into account in the case of additional employment.
Scholarships are largely awarded by the organizations for the promotion of gifted students, which are supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
In addition, a large number of foundations offer subject-specific and interdisciplinary doctoral scholarships.
Doctoral scholarships are also awarded via the CDSL. The funds for these scholarships come from the institutes/clinics where the doctorate is being carried out. Third-party funds and budget funds can also be used for scholarships. Further details can be found in the CDSL scholarship regulations. The CDSL will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Medical students in the clinical stage of their studies (5th - 8th semester) who wish to complete their doctorate in a structured program with other doctoral students can apply for a doctoral scholarship via a Research Training Group (RTG). If you have any questions about the application process, please contact the relevant Research Training Group. The CDSL will also be happy to advise you.
Doctoral students in medicine also have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship from the Excellence Medicine program at the University of Lübeck.
Travel grants for participation in conferences are awarded by the Alumni, Friends and Sponsors of the University of Lübeck.
