Forms and types of doctorates

There are various ways to do a doctorate at the University of Lübeck. Depending on whether you are aiming for an individual doctorate or a structured doctorate, the doctoral process varies.

Individual doctorate

An individual doctorate offers a high degree of freedom in the design and implementation of the doctoral project, but therefore also requires more independent organisation.

A research topic is chosen and worked on independently, usually with the support of the supervisor.

The individual doctorate is only possible in the STEM sections.

Structured promotion

Unlike an individual doctorate, the structured doctorate offers you a partly customisable curriculum and supervision by a team of at least two. Compared to an individual doctorate, it strengthens the professional and social integration of doctoral candidates in the process of scientific work. The core elements of the structured doctorate at the University of Lübeck are regular supervision meetings/progress meetings and an individualised curriculum for further qualifications.

The structured doctorate is compulsory in medicine and optional in the STEM sections.
