Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

Midwifery sciences

Focus on the new life

The eight-semester dual Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science lays the theoretical and practical foundations for practicing as a midwife as well as for further studies in the field of health sciences. The dual course of study is characterized by a close link between theory and practice, with practical assignments in clinics and obstetric facilities integrated from the first semester onwards.

There is a particular focus on evidence-based work, which is supported by the application of scientific findings in practice and by scientific seminars throughout the course.

You will learn to make evidence-based decisions and implement innovative approaches in obstetrics and midwifery. At the end of your studies, you will make your first contribution to research and the further development of midwifery work with your Bachelor's thesis.

As a graduate of the course, you can go straight into the midwifery profession or pursue a Master's degree or doctorate.

Contents of the study program

The Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science comprises theoretical and practical teaching amounting to 240 credit points (CP). The modules are thematically interlinked and build on each other so that you acquire and deepen basic knowledge and combine it with practical experience. In the final phase, you will acquire expertise that will enable you to work as an autonomous midwife and prepare you to enter the profession.

Reproductive Health

With 61 CP of theoretical teaching and 82 CP of practical phases, reproductive health forms the core of your studies. You will deal with topics relating to women's health, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and child health. Biomedical principles of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and specialist nursing knowledge are included, as well as the prevention of complications and the management of emergencies.

Scientific theory and practice

Scientific work accompanies you throughout your studies with 37 CP. You will learn to place what you have experienced in the context of evidence-based practice and to transfer innovative findings into practice. At the end of your studies, you will have the opportunity to work independently on your own topic in the Bachelor's thesis.

Empowerment and diversity

The topic of empowerment and diversity is a central component of the degree program with 15 CP. You will focus on promoting the self-determination of women and families, continuously reflect on your actions and thoughts and deal with diversity in biographical experiences and life models.

Communication and counseling

As a midwife, communication and counseling are essential aspects of your work, which you will learn and consolidate over the course of the degree program (17 CP). The focus is on person-centered, situationally adapted communication that meets the needs of women and families.

Health management

The area of health management comprises 19 CPs and deals with the legal and structural framework conditions of midwifery work, risk management, health economics and quality management.

Individual specialization

With a total of 9 CP, you can set individual priorities in your studies and choose from a variety of midwifery-specific and interdisciplinary modules.

Frequently asked questions

Midwives are in demand all over the world because they play a central role in ensuring individual and trustworthy healthcare for women, newborns and families and save lives. Our philosophy and our craft make a real difference in the world.
If you enjoy working with people, are interested in medical and social issues, have an appreciation for diverse lifestyles and are looking for a profession that fulfills you and 'makes the world a better place' - then you've come to the right place.
Midwifery is a profession with a future. You work independently in a variety of areas and will never be bored. Furthermore, the university course offers you a pathway into research and teaching.

The course is divided into theoretical and practical phases lasting several weeks. This alternation ensures that theoretical knowledge can be applied promptly in practice and that what you have experienced in practice can be reviewed and reflected on in theory.
During the theory phases, you will attend courses on the campus in Lübeck. Theoretical teaching is offered in presence, but can also take place digitally or in hybrid form. In addition, we provide you with extensive teaching materials that you can use at your own pace. Some courses are compulsory in person, for example when you are practicing practical skills in the skills lab. For the theoretical phases, it is advisable to look for accommodation in Lübeck or the surrounding area to reduce the additional burden of long journeys.
The practical phases of the degree course take place at a cooperating practice house. Our cooperating practice houses are spread throughout Schleswig-Holstein (and sometimes beyond) in large and small towns. In the application process, you can indicate which practice house is conveniently located for you personally. During the practical phases, you will also work in shifts and it is advisable to choose a practice house that is close to your home.

Many of our students live in the town where their practice is located. This helps to avoid time-consuming journeys, especially when working shifts. After all, if the shift starts very early in the day or only at night, it can sometimes be difficult to use public transport.
For the theoretical phases, many of our students come to live in Lübeck temporarily or travel there for individual days. Temporary living options include shared accommodation, renting a small room, short-term bookings via accommodation providers or using family networks.
It is also possible to apply for a practice house in Lübeck, which eliminates the need to change accommodation. Even though the need for flexible housing solutions is a particular challenge of the dual study program, our students manage to find flexible solutions that adapt to their own living situation.
If you are concerned about the issue of dual residences, please contact us for an individual consultation. We can also put you in touch with students so that you can exchange information first-hand.

For the theoretical phases, it is advisable to look for accommodation in Lübeck or the surrounding area in order to reduce the additional burden of long journeys. Start your search early, as the student housing market in Lübeck is unfortunately very limited. Also enquire at your (desired) practice house whether it can offer accommodation in Lübeck. As part of your studies, you will receive a Deutschland-Semesterticket (information on the AStA website) so that you can use public transport to commute without any additional financial burden. You will also receive an allowance during your studies.

Yes, in a dual study program you will receive a salary throughout your studies. In the case of public employers, the salary is generally based on the collective agreement for students on a dual midwifery degree course in the public sector (TVHöD). However, the exact amount may vary depending on the employer. To find out the details of your individual salary, it is best to contact your (preferred) practice directly.

Details on the application process will be published shortly before the start of the next application phase. The application period is between February and May of the year for studies starting in the next winter semester.
As part of the application, you have the opportunity to indicate your preferences for a cooperating practice house. During the application process, you will also get to know the team at the practice house in person so that you can ask individual questions about the practical phases of your studies directly on site. Of course, you can also contact the course team at any time with any questions you may have.
Several admission requirements must be met in order to apply (see above). We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the admission requirements at an early stage so that you can position yourself optimally for the application phase.

Midwifery science involves a scientific examination of practical issues. This includes, for example, reflecting on observations and actions from practice and examining whether these are compatible with the current state of research - or should be adapted. Conversely, this also means acquiring up-to-date knowledge from sources that have a trustworthy, scientific basis - and applying this knowledge in a targeted manner in practice.
Midwifery science ensures that the care of women, newborns and families in the phases of pregnancy, birth and early parenthood is always based on the current state of knowledge and is constantly evolving. As in other medical and social professions, new knowledge is added worldwide every day, so midwifery is constantly changing.
With a solid scientific education as part of your studies, you will learn the skills to access scientific knowledge and cultivate a positive attitude towards lifelong learning. You will be supported by experienced midwives who have many years of experience in research and who run active research programs.
Last but not least, the scientific orientation of the course enables you to pursue further studies, for example a Master's degree or a doctorate. Midwifery research questions often reflect the specific philosophy of midwives and are of inestimable value for the further development of high-quality, individualized and respectful obstetrics and midwifery work.

Audit matters

Two sets of regulations apply to the Dual Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science:

  1. The examination procedure regulations for all degree programs: These regulations contain guidelines that apply to all medical and nursing degree programs and all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at the University of Lübeck.
  2. The course-specific course regulations: These summarize all regulations that apply to the Midwifery Science course in particular. Among other things, the individual courses of the entire semester are listed here and a study plan is presented.
