Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

Psychology

A strong foundation

The Bachelor's degree in Psychology qualifies students to take up employment in the field of psychology. Graduates of the Bachelor's degree program have access to various professional fields in non-managerial positions: Examples include assistant jobs in healthcare, in research, in public bodies (judiciary, police, administration), in the media or in opinion research. The course provides detailed insights into the relevant professional fields and prepares students in particular for working in interdisciplinary teams.

The Bachelor's degree in Psychology creates a scientific qualification: The basics of psychological knowledge and psychological skills are taught. The course enables students to grasp the field of research and helps them to develop an initial understanding of scientific work. It teaches the ability to present scientific results appropriately and to discuss them critically.

The Bachelor's degree in Psychology also creates the prerequisites for involvement in civil society, for example for working in governmental and non-governmental organizations in the field of social support or development cooperation. The course enables students to make independent ethical statements in the area of behavior-related problems.

The Bachelor's degree in Psychology promotes personal development: dealing confidently with people with mental or medical illnesses places particular demands on empathy and professional communication skills. The Bachelor's degree program lays the foundations for this and specifically promotes this aspect of personality development. Another focus is on developing students' teamwork skills.

Application and admission

The University of Lübeck also takes into account the result of a study aptitude test for admission to the Bachelor of Psychology course from winter semester 2025/2026.

The test notification shows the test performance in two parameters: A person's percentile rank within all results of the test year and the standard value Z. In the application procedure here at the University of Lübeck, you can improve your grade for the admission ranking list by achieving good test results in the study aptitude test. If the applicant achieves the following standard score, he or she will receive an improvement in the average grade of the university entrance qualification as follows:

The following standard scores (SW) lead to an improvement in the university entrance qualification by x grade points:

SW: 100-109 - 0.1 point

SW: 110-119 - 0.2 points

SW: 120-129 - 0.3 points

SW: 130 (or more) - 0.4 points

If the standard score is less than 100 points, the average grade is not improved. Only test results from the BaPsy-DGPS that were taken no more than five years ago at the time of application will be considered.

Participation in the test is voluntary and is not a prerequisite for admission. However, all prospective students are recommended to take part in the test procedure in order to improve their chances of gaining a place.

Registration for the test will take place in the period from 15.12.2024 up to and including 15.02.2025 at https://www.studieneignungstest-psychologie.de.The test will take place in 2025 on May 24 or 25 at one of the test locations to be announced later. The test language is German only.

Current information on test locations and test dates as well as further information on test content, preparation and test fees can be found at https://www.studieneignungstest-psychologie.de.

The aptitude test can be repeated, but at the earliest after two years. According to the recommendation of the German Psychological Society and the test authors, the test certificate is valid for at least five years. During its validity, the test result can be used repeatedly for applications for admission to the same or other universities that also use the BaPsy-DGPs aptitude test for admission decisions.

Participation in the test is voluntary and is not a prerequisite for admission. You can apply at any time without taking the aptitude test. However, it is recommended that all prospective students take part in the test to improve their chances of gaining a place. A good test result can open up better chances of admission even with lower A-level grades. And even with very good A-level grades, a good test result can be essential for admission.

For applications from non-EU member states or second degree applications, please consult the FAQ at https://www.studieneignungstest-psychologie.de

This is based on the statutes of the University of Lübeck for the selection procedure in the admission-restricted Bachelor's degree program in Psychology.

Yes, there is an NC (numerus clausus). As the number of applicants exceeds the number of available study places, the Abitur grade and / or the number of waiting semesters is used as a selection criterion.
The numerus clausus describes the "admission rank". This is not fixed, but is recalculated each year after the application deadline. An admission limit (admission rank) expresses the grade of the last person admitted. Accordingly, only the NC values from previous years can be used as a guide: Selection limits/NC

The University of Lübeck will also consider the result of a study aptitude test for admission to the Bachelor of Psychology course from winter semester 2025/2026.

The waiting period before studying is the time between the Abitur and the actual start of studies. It is made up of individual waiting semesters. Each semester in which you are not enrolled at a German university after obtaining your university entrance qualification counts as a waiting semester.

The number of waiting semesters is an independent criterion for the allocation of study places by the "Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (formerly: ZVS)". Waiting semesters do not (!) improve the Abitur grade. Each year, up to 20% of places on the UzL Psychology degree course are allocated on the basis of the number of semesters spent waiting.

Places on the Bachelor of Psychology degree course are allocated exclusively according to the ranking list. This means that if applicants do not accept their study places, the next applicant on the ranking list automatically moves up. The succession procedure is carried out until all study places are filled.

The University of Lübeck will also take into account the result of a study aptitude test for admission to the Bachelor of Psychology course from winter semester 2025/2026.

There is no lottery procedure for places on the Psychology degree program at the University of Lübeck.

Places on the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Psychology are allocated exclusively by ranking list. This means that if applicants do not accept their study places, the next applicant on the ranking list automatically moves up. The succession procedure is carried out until all study places are filled.

In addition to the Psychology degree course, the University of Lübeck also offers another degree course with psychology content without admission restrictions. The Media Informatics course focuses on human-technology interaction and the design of digital systems. The interdisciplinary course integrates content from computer science, design and psychology and is dedicated to the design of digital technologies for people. The focus of the course is therefore on people as users and designers of technical systems. How must systems - such as apps or websites - be designed so that they can be operated effectively and efficiently by the user and are perceived as satisfactory? As part of the degree program, psychology enables a deeper understanding of the effect of technology on different users, which in turn enables the optimal design of systems. The course is right for you if you are interested in designing technology for people, if you have an affinity for mathematical-logical thinking and find it appealing to learn programming.

Audit matters

The examination board is made up of professors, academic staff and students. It decides on the interpretation of the examination regulations and deals with cases that may not be provided for or covered in the regulations.

Contact the examination board if something unforeseen happens during your studies, such as a prolonged illness or problems with examinations. The committee can (of course only in truly exceptional situations) grant special permission and make special arrangements for you.

Typically, you should contact the chairperson of the committee directly; they can decide many things directly and the committee does not always have to hold lengthy meetings.

The examinations for all STEM degree courses are organized centrally each semester.

Only the respective compulsory courses are noted in the examination schedule; the dates for purely elective courses are usually set by the lecturers by arrangement.

All examination dates can be found in UnivIS: Vorlesungsverzeichnis >> Klausurtermine Mint Sektion >> Bachelor Psychologie.

Registration for module examinations takes place online. Every student can register for the 1st or 2nd examination date via the QIS account up to two weeks before the end of the lecture period (we send out information with the relevant deadlines every semester). The withdrawal period ends 3 days before an examination.

In the event of withdrawal from the 1st examination date, it is possible to register for the 2nd examination date in QIS at the same time. Withdrawal from the 2nd examination is then again possible up to 3 days before the examination date.

In the event of a failed attempt, there is an obligation to take part in the next possible examination date (§ 17 Para. 2 PVO). Please also register for this in QIS.

Non-participation in an examination despite registration is counted as a failed attempt and you are obliged to take part in the next possible examination date. If participation is not possible due to illness, the MINT Examinations Office must be notified immediately. The certificate must be submitted to the Examinations Office within 3 days together with the sick note form.

All students have the right to inspect their exams within 4 weeks of being notified of their grades. If you are interested, please contact your module supervisor.

After enrolling at the University of Lübeck, all students will receive an account sheet with the initial password for the QIS portal with their student ID. When logging in for the first time, this password must be replaced by your own password.

The guidelines for good academic practice laid down by the Senate of the University of Lübeck apply to academics and students.

The guidelines on dealing with plagiarism for students and lecturers of the Psychology degree program set out how to deal with suspected cases of plagiarism in the Psychology degree program.
