Admission requirements and application

Your path to the best job in the world

The application process for the dual Bachelor's degree programme in Midwifery Science (B.Sc.) takes place directly via the responsible practice institutions (vPE), not via the University of Lübeck.

You first apply to one or more vPEs, which take on the practical part of the degree programme.

After a successful application and the conclusion of a study contract with a vPE, your documents will be forwarded to the university.

An additional application to the university is not necessary. All important information on admission requirements, deadlines and contact persons can be found on this page.

Application procedure

Note: An additional application to the University of Lübeck is not required. If you have any questions about your application, please contact the relevant vPE. The University of Lübeck cannot provide any information about the status of your application.

Admission requirements

Against the background of § 10 HebG and § 3 SGO, the prerequisite for admission to the programme is that the applicant provides the following six certificates. Details and further explanations on the individual points can be found in the drop-down menu below.

  • University entrance qualification (alternative admission routes may be possible)
  • A valid study contract with a responsible practice institution (vPE) (list)
  • An internship of at least four weeks in a relevant field of activity of a midwife (e.g. delivery room, maternity ward, freelance midwife) in accordance with the study programme regulations (SGO).
  • German language skills (language certificate at level C1)
  • Health suitability
  • Suitability of character

A certificate of general higher education entrance qualification, a relevant subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification or an entrance qualification recognised as equivalent by law or by the competent state authority serves as a higher education entrance qualification. Further advice and information on alternative routes to higher education without a higher education entrance qualification can be found here.

  • The internship can be completed in one go or in several stages ( 4 × 38.5 hours in total).
  • The internship does not have to be fully completed at the time of application, but proof of the upcoming internship must be submitted.
  • The complete confirmation of participation in the internship must be submitted by the time of enrolment at the latest.

The internship should have a total duration of 4 weeks (approx. 4 x 38.5 hours) and can cover all aspects of midwifery work. This includes, for example, clinical areas of work - such as delivery room, mother-child ward, maternity ward and maternity admission, as well as non-clinical areas of work - such as freelance midwifery, home birth assistance, midwifery practice, birth centre, early help and much more.
The internship can be completed in Germany or abroad as a whole or in sections.
If the internship (or parts of the internship) only takes place after the application, proof of the planned assignment must be submitted by the internship institution. Please note that an internship before applying can enable you to deepen your understanding of the midwifery profession.
It is often possible to complete an internship at one of our cooperating practice institutions (vPE) and this can be useful to gain a more detailed insight into midwifery work at the desired future place of work. However, an internship at a co-operating vPE is not a prerequisite and does not guarantee a place during the application process.

Applicants who do not have a German-language university entrance qualification must prove that they have successfully passed a recognised German examination. This can be done by successfully taking the "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (DSH 2), the "TestDaF" exam (TDN 4) or proof of language level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

According to § 10 HebG, only those who "are not unfit in terms of health to complete the midwifery degree programme" may complete the midwifery degree programme.
For this reason, a health aptitude test is required as part of the application process.

According to § 10 HebG, only those who "have not been guilty of behaviour that makes them unworthy or unreliable to complete the midwifery degree course" may complete the midwifery degree course.
For this reason, a certificate of good conduct must be submitted as part of the application process.

Decision support for the study programme

Before you apply, please ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I up to alternating between theory and practice at - as a rule - two different locations over four years?
  • Am I prepared to travel long distances to the University of Lübeck during the theory phase?
  • Am I prepared to adapt to a flexible learning programme (attendance with online components) of up to eight hours (including breaks) per day?
  • Am I prepared to work night/weekend and public holiday shifts during the practical phase?

Start of study

You begin your studies with the introductory week in the winter semester in October of the respective year. You can find useful information on getting started here.
