Molecular Life Science

Studying with prospects at the University of Lübeck

Do you want to work in basic medical research at universities or research institutions, conduct research in applied medical or biotechnological fields or work in R&D, M&V or QM in industrial companies? The issues our graduates work on range from research into the three-dimensional structure of proteins or sugars on the surface of viruses to new treatment methods for infectious and inflammatory diseases and new methods for using the body's own tissues. The content of the MLS course is based on a broad scientific education in the fields of molecular cell and structural biology and their application in medicine and biotechnology.

In the Bachelor's program, you will learn the necessary basics of the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, mathematics/computer science, life sciences)

In the Master's degree course, these are deepened, you learn about other fields of medical research and can specialize in cell biology, structural biology, neuroscience or clinical immunology.

Introducing the Molecular Life Science degree program

Interdisciplinarity

Life cannot be researched using a single discipline. Biomolecules have a physical structure and interact with each other in chemical reactions. In addition, molecular biology research generates large amounts of data that can only be interpreted with the help of bioinformatics and mathematical methods. The Molecular Life Science degree course takes all of this into account.

Good support

With us, you will begin your studies at one of the smallest state universities in Germany. This enables excellent study conditions. The good teaching quality is repeatedly confirmed by the CHE ranking. You will get to know each other quickly on the central campus.

Practical

You will have the opportunity to learn all relevant techniques and apply your knowledge of molecular life in a variety of practical courses during your Bachelor's degree. Right from the start, you will have to work independently and autonomously in the laboratory under supervision, which requires the appropriate physical skills. For your Bachelor's/Master's thesis, you will be involved in current research projects and work independently and autonomously in the laboratory.

Laboratories

The university has state-of-the-art laboratories for molecular medical research, including laboratories with a high security level for handling dangerous pathogens, high-performance computing clusters for bioinformatics and systems biology.

Social relevance

The course is geared towards medical research. Stem cell research, structural analysis, infection and inflammation research and other disciplines enable new approaches to therapies for emerging diseases. This means that you can later have a direct influence on this highly relevant social issue: Our health.

Region

You start your studies in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The old town is part of the UNSECO World Heritage Site and the beach on the Baltic Sea is only 20 km away. The infrastructural connections to Hamburg are also very good. From university sports and student theater to music (university choir, university orchestra, Pop Synphonics) and concerts: There is something for everyone in the cultural program.

Career prospects

You will be sought after as a scientist at universities, research institutes or as a laboratory, development or project manager in companies in the diagnostics, pharmaceutical, cosmetics or biotechnology industries.
Due to the many internships, especially the block internships in the Master's program, in which you are involved in real research projects, you are practice-oriented graduates. You solve problems independently, work interdisciplinarily and make the most of your creative potential.
