Course of studies, specific fields and terms:

Classes and lectures:

  • PF2455-V: General principles of nursing medicine (lecture, 1 SWS)
  • Block internship in social medicine and evidence-based medicine (seminar, 2 SWS)
  • PF2455-S: Legal foundations of nursing medicine (seminar, 1 SWS)
  • PF2450-V: Social and population medicine for nursing professions (lecture, 1 SWS)

Workload:

  • 75 hours in-classroom work
  • 40 hours integrated internship hours

Contents of teaching:

  • Basic principles of evidence-based medicine/nursing and healthcare (similarities and differences)
  • Methods of evidence-based patient information and shared decision-making, also in multi-professional care contexts
  • Fundamentals of population, social and occupational medicine, public health and evidence-based healthcare (EbHC)
  • In-depth study of SGB V and SGB XI and consecutive guidelines, statutes and agreements of the self-governing partners, especially with regard to the prescription of medical devices, (care-related) aids, remedies, home nursing/outpatient care, DiGAs and DiPAs and other digital support systems (indications, prescriptions, billing, refinancing and budget responsibility)
  • Civil and criminal law implications of the independent exercise of medical tasks
  • Importance of extended curative nursing services for the further development of the nursing profession
  • Introduction of further important social law regulations for healthcare and nursing care: e.g. SGB VII (statutory accident insurance), SGB IX (rehabilitation and participation of disabled people, pension insurance), Occupational Diseases Ordinance (BKV), Patients' Rights Act, Transplantation Act
  • In-depth study of the structure and organisation of the health and care system (including the tasks and areas of responsibility of the individual professional groups involved in care) in Germany, also in comparison with other highly developed countries, representation at the health policy decision-making level
  • Excursus on self-administration in the healthcare system and decision-making processes for adjustments to structures and processes at the macro level (EbHC)
  • Recent and currently discussed normative adjustments in the structures and processes of healthcare and nursing care as well as the potentials and limitations of implementation (e.g. disease management programmes, integrated care).
  • Social law, theoretical and empirical foundations of rehabilitation (in general as well as specifically related to people with common internal, surgical or orthopaedic, neurological and psychiatric illnesses)
  • Phases and forms of rehabilitation (in general and specifically for people with common internal, surgical or orthopaedic, neurological and psychiatric illnesses)
  • Tasks of the nursing profession in the context of rehabilitation (in general and specifically related to people with common internal, surgical or orthopaedic, neurological and psychiatric illnesses)

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can explain the similarities and differences between the objectives, basic principles and decision-making contexts of evidence-based medicine/nursing versus evidence-based healthcare (EbHC).
  • Understanding of knowledge: Students can explain the common basic principles of evidence-based medicine and nursing and critically reflect on the differences in practical implementation. This implies in particular the requirements of evidence-based patient/health information and shared decision-making.
  • Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can explain the significance of other social law regulations for health and nursing care and name and categorise the corresponding normative sources: e.g. SGB VII (statutory accident insurance), SGB IX (rehabilitation and participation of disabled people, pension insurance), Occupational Diseases Ordinance (BKV), Patients' Rights Act, Transplantation Act.
  • Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can explain important concepts, theories and models of population, social and occupational medicine, public health and rehabilitation and differentiate between them.
  • Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can explain important legal and economic principles and implications of the independent and autonomous exercise of medical tasks in nursing care in accordance with Annex 5 Part B PflAPrV (liability and criminal law, benefit and budget law in accordance with SGB V and SGB XI and consecutive guidelines, statutes and agreements of the self-governing partners, especially with regard to the prescription of medical devices, (nursing-relevant) aids, remedies, home nursing/outpatient care, DiGAs and DiPAs and other digital support systems. They can explain the key legal requirements for the evaluation and use of medical devices (including digital technologies).
  • Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can describe the medical tasks intended for independent, autonomous practice in accordance with Annex 5 Part B PflAPrV.
  • Understanding of knowledge, understanding of the profession: Students are able to critically reflect on the legal, economic and professional ethical consequences of the independent, autonomous exercise of curative tasks and requirements for their own competences and quality assurance.
  • Utilisation and transfer: Students can apply the principles of evidence-based medicine and nursing to nursing and medical decision-making situations in the care of people with complex health support needs. They can research and critically evaluate suitable knowledge resources and instruments and draw conclusions for application in practice.
  • Utilisation and transfer: Students can name possible forms of rehabilitation services and possible funding bodies as well as other sources of information depending on the type of illness/health disorder and life situation. They can recommend individually suitable further counselling services.
  • Scientific self-conception/professional understanding: Students are able to critically reflect on the opportunities, challenges and risks of integrating extended curative tasks into the independent, autonomous planning and implementation of the nursing process from a professional, ethical and legal perspective, and are aware of the need for evidence-based decisions in the performance of these tasks.
