Course of studies, specific fields and terms:

Classes and lectures:

  • Core elements of professional nursing practice I (seminar, 2 SWS)
  • Basic principles of professional communication and documentation in nursing practice I (exercise, 1 SWS)

Workload:

  • 55 hours integrated internship hours
  • 50 hours private studies
  • 45 hours in-classroom work

Contents of teaching:

  • Professional theories and core elements of professional behaviour in nursing care
  • Principles of appreciative, empathic communication and interaction (in general and specifically in carer-patient/resident relationships): Communication theories according to Schulz von Thun, Watzlawick and Rogers
  • Importance of the involvement of carers and relatives
  • Importance, methods and instruments of interprofessional exchange in day-to-day care
  • Basic principles of care documentation (analogue and digital)
  • Development of patient/resident files and important written sources of information for the nursing care of people in need of care
  • Fundamentals of professional interest groups

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • Knowledge and understanding: Students know and understand definitions of the term profession and the core elements of professional behaviour in nursing.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They are aware of the particular importance of successful communication and interaction with the person in need of care and/or their carer(s) and are familiar with the basic principles of empathic, appreciative communication.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They are aware of the particular importance of a regular and accurate exchange of information (verbal and written) with others involved in care and treatment.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They know and understand the basic principles of documenting nursing information or information obtained by carers (nursing diagnostics, action planning, nursing outcomes, vital signs). They are familiar with the basic structure of multi-professional information resources (patient/resident files, electronic documentation systems).
  • Knowledge and understanding: You know important additional tools for the intra- and interprofessional exchange of information (e.g. handovers, medical history).
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: You can make contact and communicate with people in need of care whose cognitive or communicative abilities are not significantly impaired and/or their carers in a manner appropriate to the situation.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: You can appropriately document the results of your own nursing work (observation results and nursing diagnostic findings on support needs, planned nursing measures) and communicate them verbally to others involved in the provision of care.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: They are able to localise written care-relevant information on the state of health or care of people in need of care in the respective information/documentation system and use it appropriately for their own care work.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: They apply communication models according to Schulz von Thun, Watzlawick and Rogers appropriately to the situation.
  • Communication and cooperation: You can communicate relevant aspects in an interprofessional team in a manner appropriate to the target group.
  • Knowledge and understanding: You are aware of the importance of interest groups relevant to professional policy.

Module examination(s):
- PF1200-L1: Core elements of professional nursing practice 1, oral examination, 10 minutes, 100% of the module grade

The examination (oral individual examination, 10 minutes) is deemed to have been completed if it has been graded at least as sufficient.

For students of SGO Nursing 2020 and Applied Nursing Science (part-time) 2022, 2 SWS seminar + 2 SWS exercise and 70 integrated hours of practical work apply.
