Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

Medical nutrition science

A Bachelor's degree with a focus on human biology and nutrition

This degree program combines natural sciences with nutritional physiology, nutritional science and nutritional medicine in a way that is unique in Germany. You will learn how food and its ingredients influence health. There is a lot of practical content to help you apply your knowledge.

The degree course is internationally compatible and provides worldwide access to the latest biomedical research. Internships abroad are possible during the course. Many of our students complete their Bachelor's thesis in international research institutions - from Mexico and Norway to Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan. Our networks and various funding opportunities are available to them for this.

Thanks to the cooperation with the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Lübeck, there is a close connection to medical practice. Here, new findings from nutritional medicine are tested in studies and used for therapies.

The Institute of Nutritional Medicine has numerous collaborations not only with the food industry and non-university research institutions, but also with professional associations, health insurance companies, trade associations, pharmaceutical companies, start-ups, the healthcare industry and the media. This diversity is the basis for the direct practical relevance of our research and teaching. This gives our students the unique opportunity to get to know a wide variety of fields early on in their studies, develop their own interests and make contacts for their future career.
All of this is rounded off by excellent teaching and personal interaction between students and lecturers. The lectures in the Medical Nutrition Science degree program are regularly rated by students as the best courses at the entire university. This shows that we combine teaching and research in a way that not only imparts knowledge, but also enables personal development in an appreciative and motivating environment.

Frequently asked questions

You should enjoy personal challenges and have a keen interest in scientific research. In addition to the general requirements for university studies, we strongly recommend that you have a solid background in the natural sciences (e.g. by choosing an appropriate specialization in the upper secondary school).

We define medical nutrition science as a natural science at the interface between medicine and biochemistry, which deals with the principles, composition and effects of nutrition, especially in the context of diseases. In particular, the identification of molecular target structures of nutritional components in the context of individual genetic characteristics will shape the development of innovative nutritional concepts in the future, with the aim of maintaining health and treating diseases more effectively. The Lübeck curriculum enables you to be part of this interesting development.

  • You will receive a profound scientific education during your Bachelor's degree, which will later enable you to choose between the three university Master's programs Nutritional Medicine, Molecular Life Science and Infection Biology, depending on your interests.
  • You will work on current, internationally visible research projects as part of internships, Bachelor's and Master's theses.
  • The course is versatile and highly interdisciplinary, opening up numerous interesting career opportunities for students.

At the University of Lübeck, it is possible to switch to the English-language Master's degree course in Nutritional Medicine directly after the Bachelor's degree. There, the basics of the Bachelor's degree course are deepened in a subject-specific manner and placed directly in the context of research, development and start-ups. In addition, the Medical Nutritional Science course provides access to relevant Master's courses throughout Germany.

Of course, it is also possible to enter the job market directly after the Bachelor's degree. Thanks to the broad scientific knowledge acquired during the course, graduates are qualified for research and development tasks, particularly in nutrition research and the food industry.

Important: The Medical Nutrition Science degree course is geared towards scientific research and does not qualify students for patient-oriented nutritional therapy practice.

The aim of the course is to prepare students for the specialist tasks of a research nutritionist.
The Bachelor's degree opens up career prospects in research and industry. Typical fields of employment include quality assurance, product development and marketing as well as applied research.

Audit matters

As a rule, there are two examinations per module each year: One at the beginning of the lecture-free period directly after the semester and another at the end of the lecture-free period. Each student has three attempts to pass the examination. The final module grades almost always consist solely of this examination grade.

Dates

The examinations for all STEM courses are organized centrally each semester. Every lecturer is required to adhere to this central schedule.
This schedule only takes into account the respective compulsory courses; the dates for purely elective courses are usually set by the lecturers by arrangement.
All examination dates should also be available in UnivIS.

Chairmen

Prof. Dr. Christian Sina (Chairman) / Prof. Dr. Karsten Seeger (Deputy Chairman)

The current composition of the Examination Board can be found here.

The Examination Board

Please contact the Examination Board if you have any problems concerning your studies, e.g. prolonged illness or problems with examinations. In justified exceptional situations, the committee can grant special permission. You should contact the chair of the committee, Prof. C. Sina, directly. The chairman can decide many things directly.

Prof. C. Sina offers a consultation hour for examination matters during the lecture period. This is always on Mondays from 12 - 1 p.m. (please register in advance with the secretary's office).

Recognition of external achievements

If you would like to have external achievements from other universities recognized or internships that you have completed during your vocational training (MTA, CTA, etc.), please use the form"Recognition of external achievements" from the Student Service Center website.
