Medical nutrition science

Studying with prospects at the University of Lübeck

What role does our diet play in our health? How can it contribute to the prevention and treatment of diseases or influence the ageing process? The interdisciplinary degree course in Medical Nutritional Science at the University of Lübeck combines medical principles with biochemical and scientific approaches to get to the bottom of these questions.

At the interface between medicine and the STEM sciences, the degree program encompasses key disciplines such as human biology, nutritional science and life sciences. Students gain an in-depth understanding of how nutrients interact with metabolic processes at a molecular level, contribute to disease prevention or can be used therapeutically in a targeted manner.

In addition to traditional topics in nutritional medicine, nutritional physiology and biochemistry, students are systematically introduced to current nutritional science issues. Teaching is closely linked to the interdisciplinary research projects on campus - from basic research to clinical application.

A particular focus is on the investigation of molecular mechanisms of food components and their influence on cellular signaling pathways, inflammatory processes and metabolic diseases. The course is therefore aimed in particular at those interested in the natural sciences who wish to pursue a career in research or applied nutritional medicine.

Introducing the Medical Nutritional Sciences degree program

Interdisciplinarity

The Medical Nutrition Science degree program combines basic research and clinical research.

Good support

Excellent study conditions are achieved through good teaching quality and a family atmosphere on campus.

Practical

The course content is deepened in numerous practical courses, seminars and exercises. During your Bachelor's thesis, you will be involved in current research projects and learn to work independently on scientific issues in the laboratory.

Laboratories

The university has state-of-the-art laboratories for molecular medical research, including laboratories with a high security level for handling dangerous pathogens, high-performance computing clusters for bioinformatics and systems biology.

Social relevance

The clarification of connections between nutrition and disease processes represents a major challenge for biomedical research.

Region

It is 20 km from Lübeck to the Baltic Sea beach and less than 45 minutes by train to the metropolis of Hamburg. The old town is part of the UNSECO World Heritage Site. From university sports to concerts: There is something for everyone in the cultural program.

Career prospects

The Bachelor's degree opens up career prospects in research and industry. Typical fields of employment include quality assurance, product development and marketing as well as applied research.

The scientific orientation of the course opens up a wide range of career prospects for graduates, primarily in the field of basic and applied research in academic and non-academic institutions such as universities, research centers, biotechnology companies, food and pharmaceutical industries. Other fields of activity include teaching and education, quality management, association work and management consultancy. The Master's degree also qualifies students to take up a doctoral thesis.

Frequently asked questions

Here you will find an overview of frequently asked questions

We define nutritional science as a natural science at the interface between medicine and biochemistry, which deals with the principles, composition and effects of nutrition.

In Lübeck, the main focus is on the molecular mechanisms of action of nutrients that are relevant for maintaining health and treating diseases. Dealing with this requires comprehensive knowledge of natural sciences, nutritional science and human biology. The course is therefore primarily aimed at students with an interest in the natural sciences who can imagine working in research at a later stage. For applicants with a primary interest in classical ecotrophology and nutritional counseling, we would like to refer you to the courses offered by other universities!

Yes, both the Bachelor's degree course in Medical Nutritional Science and the Master's degree course in Nutritional Medicine are admission-restricted. There is a numerus clausus (NC), which is demand-driven. The selection limit of the previous application procedure can be found here. There are 65 places available on the Bachelor's degree program. The course starts in the winter semester.

In addition to the general criteria to qualify for university studies, you should above all have a keen interest in scientific issues and good to very good previous knowledge of natural sciences. A good knowledge of English is an advantage, but can also be acquired during your studies. You can test your prior knowledge of natural sciences in this test. The test is only a non-binding self-assessment of how easy you think it will be for you to start studying Medical Nutrition Science.

In the Bachelor's degree program, you will first learn the basics of chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology. Building on this, you will receive a solid scientific and nutritional education with courses in nutritional medicine, nutritional physiology, biochemistry and mathematics/computer science. The course is rounded off by a section in which, for example, the basics of business administration or ethical aspects of nutritional science are taught.
