Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Biophysics

Studying with prospects at the University of Lübeck

The Master's degree program in Biophysics at the University of Lübeck qualifies you for interdisciplinary, research-oriented work at the interface between physics, chemistry and biology. The focus is on understanding molecular mechanisms and modern optical and structural biology methods, always with reference to medicine.

The Master's degree course is much less pre-structured than the Bachelor's degree course and offers plenty of scope in the form of electives, internships and, of course, the Master's thesis.

The first year of study focuses on theory, while the second year is almost exclusively devoted to several months of practical work in the form of block internships and a Master's thesis.

Hints for application

A Bachelor's degree in biophysics or a comparable course is required for admission to the Master's degree program. In addition to in-depth knowledge of physics, applicants must also demonstrate basic knowledge of cell and molecular biology.

Further details can be found in the program regulations.

Contents of the study program

Compared to the Bachelor's degree course, the Master's degree course is far less pre-structured and offers a great deal of freedom in the form of electives, internships and, of course, the Master's thesis.

The first year of study focuses on theory, while the second year is almost exclusively devoted to practical work lasting several months in the form of block placements and the Master's thesis.

Competencies and key qualifications

Graduates of our Biophysics degree program have learned to

  • to research and work in a practice-oriented and targeted manner,
  • understand biophysical problems quickly and find solutions,
  • understand medical issues and develop biophysical approaches to solve them
  • describe difficult issues concisely and communicate them to an interdisciplinary project team or customers in a suitable manner,
  • derive practical solutions from research results.

Teaching key qualifications

In our degree program, we aim to provide graduates with the following key qualifications for their working life:

  • Analytical thinking
  • Ability to abstract
  • Designing practical, realizable solutions
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Teamwork skills
  • Interdisciplinary and international cooperation and communication skills
  • Audience-oriented presentation of even complex contexts in written and spoken form

Curriculum

All courses are listed in the recommended course of study. It indicates the semester in which a course should be attended.

Further information on the individual modules can be found in the Master's module handbook. There are links to these in the curriculum.

Application and admission

It is possible to apply for the Master's program in the winter semester. The application period for the winter semester is from May 1 to July 15.

The Master's degree program in Biophysics is a degree program with admission requirements. These are listed in the program regulations.

You can find all the important information about starting your first semester here.

Frequently asked questions

In science degree courses, a bachelor's degree is often followed by a master's degree and then a doctorate. Many of the graduates who work in industry work in the field of research.

The module handbooks provide an initial detailed overview of the degree program. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail or in person. We would also like to draw your attention to the Campus Day.

Audit matters

As a rule, there are two examinations per module each year: One at the beginning of the lecture-free period directly after the semester and another at the end of the lecture-free period. Each student has three attempts to pass the examination. The final module grades almost always consist only of this examination grade.

Please use the form on the Student Service Center website for the recognition of external achievements.

The examinations for all STEM courses are organized centrally each semester. Every lecturer is required to adhere to this central schedule.

Only the respective compulsory courses are noted in this schedule; the dates for purely elective courses are usually set by the lecturers after consultation.

All examination dates should also be listed in UnivIS.

Recognition of external achievements

If you would like to have external achievements from other universities recognized or internships that you have completed during your vocational training (MTA, CTA, etc.), please use the form "Recognition of external achievements" from the Student Service Center website.

Two regulations apply to the Master's degree program in Biophysics:

  1. The examination procedure regulations for all degree programs: These regulations contain guidelines that apply to all technical and scientific degree programs at the University of Lübeck.
  2. The course-specific course regulations: These summarize all regulations that apply specifically to the course. Among other things, the individual courses of the entire semester are listed here and a study plan is presented.

All current versions of the regulations can be found here. The most recent version at the start of the degree program applies to each student.

The Master's thesis is planned for the 4th semester of the Master's degree program.
The thesis must be officially registered with the Examination Office.

From this point in time, the student has a maximum of 6 months to complete the thesis. Only in justified exceptional cases can an extension of 1 month be granted.

The topic of the Master's thesis must be related to the course content. This can be confirmed by the Chair of the Examination Board. Topics for the Master's thesis can be requested in all institutes and clinics. It can also be carried out at external institutes and companies. However, this must be approved in advance.

The Master's thesis includes a final colloquium. Both must be assessed by two examiners.

Master's graduation ceremony

At the annual graduation ceremony of the University of Lübeck in the Petri Church in July, the Master's graduates of the STEM section are also bid farewell. Further information will be announced in good time.
