Applications in industry, medicine, administration and business are generating increasingly large amounts of data, the analysis of which offers great potential for optimizing processes and products and acquiring new customers, to name just a few possibilities.
The term data science has emerged to characterize the extraction of knowledge from large amounts of data so that recommendations for action or information to support decision-making can be systematically derived. In addition, the evaluation of networked structures, such as the web, will continue to gain in importance in the future, so that a variety of new fields of application can be opened up.
Companies can work more effectively with the web and data science, new treatment methods can be developed, administrative structures can be better organized and economic processes can be better managed.
This exciting field requires solid knowledge of computer science, in particular special knowledge in the areas of algorithms, coding, data management (big data) and data analysis (data mining) as well as in the field of machine learning. Computer science knowledge is combined with relevant mathematical methods in the specialization, especially from the fields of stochastics (probability theory and statistics) and optimization.
Building on this knowledge, students are enabled, for example, to determine classifiers or automatically extract models from data, whereby various mathematical and computer science modeling techniques must be systematically combined for the targeted practical use of models and software techniques for evaluating large amounts of data (e.g. cloud computing) must be used effectively. Students specializing in Web and Data Science acquire the knowledge and skills to apply modern data analysis tools and develop new tools for the future. Lübeck is one of the pioneering universities to offer such a subject within the computer science degree program in a systematic and structured way.
