Course of studies, specific fields and terms:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing 2020, optional subject, nursing science

Classes and lectures:

  • PF4112-Ü: Specialised care for critically ill people (exercise, 1 SWS)
  • PF4112-S: Person-centred care of critically ill people (seminar, 1 SWS)
  • PF4112-V: Person-centred care of critically ill people (lecture, 1 SWS)

Workload:

  • 75 hours private studies
  • 45 hours in-classroom work

Contents of teaching:

  • Overview of care on the Intermediate Care (IMC) ward: treatment and care of patients with increased monitoring and care requirements.
  • Basics of IMC care: monitoring vital functions, respiratory support and non-invasive ventilation, handling supply and drainage lines, handling medical devices
  • Specialised care and nursing responsibilities in highly complex care situations: o Care in the post-operative phase o Care after long-term intensive medical therapy o Care for delirium and organic psychosyndromes o Acute situations and resuscitation
  • Interprofessional communication and cooperation on the IMC ward
  • Support for relatives in critical life situations
  • Legal and ethical aspects of intensive medicine and intensive care
  • Quality indicators for IMC care: structural, process and outcome indicators
  • Dealing with your own experience of acute and borderline situations

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • Broadening knowledge o Students are familiar with nursing and medical objectives and tasks on the IMC ward. o Students have an overview of common clinical pictures and associated special care requirements on the IMC ward. o Students have an overview of special requirements for communication and cooperation on the IMC, both intra- and interprofessionally, as well as with patients and relatives.
  • Deepening knowledge o Students know the function and use of medical devices on the IMC, e.g. for monitoring, infusion/perfusion, administration of enteral nutrition, invasive measurement of vital parameters, non-invasive ventilation/respiratory therapy. o Students know the standard and limit values of vital parameters and common assessment instruments for IMC patients. o Students know the objectives and nursing handling of common supply and discharge lines for IMC patients.
  • Understanding of knowledge o Students reflect critically on different patient-related information in complex care situations and weigh up decisions in a situation-related and technically plausible manner.
  • Benefits and transfer o Students record and evaluate vital signs and common assessment instruments for IMC patients. o Students can insert nasal gastric tubes and transurethral bladder catheters and take blood from horizontal venous and arterial accesses. o Students apply case-related prophylaxis. o Students apply strategies for coping with stress.
  • Scientific innovation o Students identify relevant nursing issues, formulate and process research questions and methods and derive action strategies for IMC nursing practice.
  • Communication and cooperation o Students communicate adequately with others involved in care on case-related clinical issues, making correct written and verbal use of medical and interprofessional terminology. o Students communicate adequately with relatives in critical care situations, drawing on known communication models and theories as well as nursing counselling approaches.
  • Academic self-image / professionalism o Students develop a self-image for the framework conditions and organisational possibilities of academically qualified nursing staff at the IMC

Module examination(s):
- PF4112-L1: Intermediate Care, presentation (B), 30 min, 100% of the module grade, ungraded

The presentation (20 min + 10 min discussion) is part of the required active participation in the seminar and is therefore a prerequisite for the module assessment. The examination is deemed to have been completed if it has been graded at least as sufficient.

The exact requirements for the presentation will be announced by the lecturer responsible for the module at the beginning of the module.
