Course of studies, specific fields and terms:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing 2020, optional subject, nursing science

Classes and lectures:

  • PF4110-Ü: Family-centred care in paediatrics (exercise, 1 SWS)
  • PF4111-S: Special care of premature and newborn babies (seminar, 1 SWS)
  • PF4110-V: Family-centred care in paediatrics (lecture, 1 SWS)

Workload:

  • 45 hours in-classroom work
  • 75 hours private studies

Contents of teaching:

  • General paediatrics: aetiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and prognosis of common diseases in general paediatrics (including typical infectious diseases in childhood, metabolic and nutritional disorders, CF)
  • Neonatology: aetiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and prognosis of common diseases and complications in neonatology and the intensive medical treatment of babies and infants born at term
  • Neonatology: Nursing-relevant observation criteria and instruments for monitoring the health status of premature and newborn children in neonatology and intensive care medicine, including evidence-based recommendations
  • Neonatology: Indications, procedures and potential complications of medical or therapeutic interventions in neonatology or paediatric intensive care medicine in which nurses are usually involved
  • Neonatology: Needs and psychosocial stress of affected parents and families and the need to involve family carers
  • Ethical conflict situations in neonatology/paediatric intensive care medicine and strategies for decision-making
  • (Low-threshold) services for, in particular, longer-term psychosocial support, accompaniment and rehabilitation of affected children and their families (theoretical models, empirical findings on acceptance and effectiveness as well as relevant determinants of utilisation, role of the care professions in relation to the other professional groups involved)
  • Case-related deepening of knowledge and application in neonatology: evidence-based recommendations for care-relevant interventions (diagnostics, prevention, treatment; involvement of family caregivers) in the context of neonatological or paediatric intensive medical care.
  • Internship in paediatrics / neonatology
  • Case-related transfer of clinical knowledge content to nursing diagnostics and decision-making for people in need of care with paediatric diseases or neonatal care
  • Information, guidance and counselling needs of the parents concerned (and depending on the age/abilities of the children)

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • Knowledge and understanding: They have a sound knowledge and understanding of the aetiology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of typical childhood illnesses that are particularly relevant to the field of nursing due to their prevalence and/or clinical reasons. They are particularly sensitised to the role of parents in the context of the care process.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They have a theoretically and empirically sound knowledge and understanding of the aetiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and treatment as well as the prognosis of common diseases and complications in neonatology and the intensive medical treatment of babies and infants born at term.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They know and understand the needs and psychosocial burdens of the parents and families concerned and are sensitised to the need to involve family caregivers in accordance with their preferences and resources.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They know and understand evidence-based recommendations for care-relevant interventions (diagnostics, prevention, treatment, involvement of family caregivers) in the context of neonatological or paediatric intensive care. They also know and understand the indications, procedures and potential complications of medical or therapeutic interventions in neonatology or paediatric intensive care in which nurses are involved.
  • Knowledge and understanding: They are able to integrate clinical knowledge on a case-by-case basis with regard to nursing diagnostics and decision-making (exemplarily limited to diseases with a high prevalence in nursing care settings).
  • Knowledge and understanding: They are able to recognise and assess the health status and health needs of individuals and families within the context of their cultures and communities.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: They are able to recognise the information, guidance and counselling needs of the affected parents (and, depending on age/ability, also of the sick children) and, as required, provide nursing information, counselling and guidance in accordance with the principles of evidence-based patient information and shared decision-making. They are sensitive to any existing ethical conflicts or particular psychological stress situations and are able to provide the necessary further specialist support.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: They are able to make decisions on the basis of ethical principles. They are aware of the potential and limitations of their clinical competences and take these into account in their own nursing decisions and actions. They are able to responsibly develop their knowledge, understanding and competences by reflecting on their own clinical experience, researching and critically evaluating external scientific evidence and engaging in appropriate dialogue with colleagues from their own and other participating professional groups.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: They are able to plan and provide care for families within their area of responsibility. In doing so, the health promotion of the individual, the family and the entire living environment is taken into account.
  • Use, application and generation of knowledge: You can participate safely and appropriately in medical or therapeutic measures in neonatology or paediatric intensive care medicine.
  • Communication and co-operation: They are able to communicate adequately with others involved in the provision of care on case-related clinical issues and make correct written and oral use of medical and inter-professional specialist terminology.
  • Communication and cooperation: You can recognise the need for clinical information and/or specialist information for the nursing assessment of the state of health of neonatal or intensive care children and obtain the necessary information.

The presentation (20 min + 10 min discussion) is part of the required active participation in the seminar and is therefore a prerequisite for the module assessment. The examination is deemed to have been completed if it has been graded at least as sufficient.

The exact requirements for the presentation will be announced by the lecturer responsible for the module at the beginning of the module.
