Master of Science (M.Sc.)

IT security

Shaping a secure future

The aim of the Master's degree program in IT Security is to enable students to understand and deal with a wide range of information processing problems by teaching methods and knowledge as well as practicing skills in the most important areas of computer science and IT security. In contrast to the Bachelor's program, the emphasis is on the acquisition of skills for scientific work.
The Master's program in IT Security is research-oriented and consecutive to the Bachelor's program in IT Security. It focuses in particular on the analysis, description, construction and validation of secure and reliable information processing systems.

Graduates of the Master's degree program receive a special scientific qualification that enables them to work on basic topics or to develop particularly complex systems in management positions, placing particular emphasis on security and reliability.
Particularly good graduates or later doctoral students from the field of IT security will also find additional interesting job opportunities in research and teaching in the research clusters of our own university and the BioMedTec Campus due to the special local character.

Contents of the study program

The Master's degree program in IT Security is a research-oriented program that focuses on teaching scientific working methods and current research results. Students are enabled to conduct independent research and contribute to the further development of the subject area.

By integrating current research results in seminars and modules such as "Communication and System Security", students gain an insight into the latest developments in IT security.

A special feature of the Master's degree program is that it consists mainly of elective modules. These are offered in the areas of "Security and Privacy" and "Safety and Reliability". Students therefore have the freedom to largely design their studies themselves and tailor them to their individual interests and professional goals.
In order to enable students to specialize individually, the degree course offers the opportunity to specialize in a further IT specialization. This flexibility allows students to tailor their studies to their individual interests and career goals.

Another highlight of the Master's degree program is the integration of a case study, which enables students to deal with a specific, security-critical problem in a research institution or company. The case study offers the opportunity to deepen research methods and security concepts in a real context and thus develop a deep understanding of the complexity of modern IT security problems.

The Master's thesis offers students the opportunity to research a complex topic in the field of IT security, privacy or reliability comprehensively and in depth. Under the guidance of experienced academic supervision, students have the opportunity to conduct independent research, analyze it critically and develop innovative solutions. The thesis should not only deepen theoretical concepts, but also demonstrate practical relevance by addressing current challenges in IT security. Through the Master's thesis, students demonstrate their ability to apply scientific methods, master complex problems and present their results in a clear and structured manner.

Frequently asked questions

The Master's degree program is designed to enable students to understand and solve a wide range of problems relating to secure and reliable information processing. The focus is on the acquisition of skills for scientific work. In the Master's program, teaching moves away from the traditional school model and towards discussion, projects and independent research. Ultimately, the Master's is the basis for further academic qualifications, such as a doctorate, or for management positions in the field of IT security in business.

Our Master's courses are taught in English and thus prepare you optimally for a future job in a globalized world.

The Master's degree course is admission-restricted and is taught exclusively in English. A Bachelor's degree in IT security or a related subject with a grade of 2.7 or better is generally required. The exact admission requirements can be found in the program regulations. We currently admit an unlimited number of students to the Master's program as long as they meet the requirements. Individual courses may have a participant limit. Applications can be made online via the university website. The application deadline for the Master's program is 15.07. for the winter semester and 15.01. for the summer semester.

The selection is initially limited to the list in the degree program regulations and a general list of interdisciplinary modules. Compulsory elective modules can be completed beyond the specified scope. At the end, students can then choose which modules are to be included in the overall grade. Compulsory courses cannot be taken again as compulsory elective modules.

In addition to these subjects, the Examination Board may recognize additional courses for the subject-specific and non-subject-specific compulsory electives.
