Leave of absence

The exact legal framework for a leave of absence can be found in the university's matriculation regulations. This page serves as a guide. You must submit a written application for a semester of leave of absence. A leave of absence is not possible in the first semester. The semester fee must still be paid during the leave of absence.

Semester leaves must be applied for by September 30 at the latest for leaves of absence for the winter semester and by March 31 for leaves of absence for the summer semester.

A student can be granted leave of absence upon written application if an important reason is proven. Important reasons include in particular

  • Completion of service: The notification of compulsory service must be enclosed with the application.
  • Illness and care: You or a close relative (parents, children or spouse) are ill or need to be cared for. Proof is a medical certificate or a certificate from the care insurance fund.
  • Study abroad or at another university: If you are planning to study abroad, you can provide evidence of your attendance at the foreign university during the period of leave of absence in your application for leave of absence. The same applies to research stays.
  • Pregnancy, maternity leave or caring for a child
  • Special social emergency

During a leave of absence, the student's rights and obligations are suspended. No examinations can be taken at the first attempt and repeat examinations may be taken, but the obligation to repeat examinations is suspended.

The form for applying for a semester of leave can be found under Forms and information sheets.
