Contents of teaching:

  • Historical, ethical and theoretical debates in psychology and psychotherapy based on selected topics.
  • Heterogeneity of concepts of illness and health and their implications for mental health and the management of mental disorders
  • The psych-sciences in a historical, social, cultural, and political context
  • Social factors in relation to concepts of the psyche, particularly in relation to issues of cultural background, migration experience, age, gender, and sexuality

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • Students will be able to present, critically reflect, and discuss significant controversies on selected topics in psychology and/or psychotherapy.
  • You will have developed an understanding of the philosophical, cultural, and ethical implications of producing and applying knowledge about the psyche.
  • They have basic knowledge of crucial stages in the history of knowledge and science of selected topics in psychology/psychotherapy.
  • You will be able to reflect on scientific literature on the above-mentioned range of topics and discuss it in the group.
  • They acquire argumentative skills and competences in interdisciplinary discussion (philosophy, sociology, history, psychology, different approaches to psychotherapy).
  • Self-reflection on future role in psychology and/or psychotherapy

  • portfolio exam - the concrete examination elements and their weights will be published in the course

Admission requirements for enrolling in the module:

- Attendance at at least 80% of seminar sessions
- Presentation
- Discussion of selected questions in the seminar

Examination:
- PY1914-L1: Psychological Humanities, portfolio exam consisting of:
30 points for attendance at at least 80% of the seminar sessions, 40 points for a presentation, and 30 points for a written discussion of selected questions in the seminar

The grade is calculated as follows: 50 to 54 points for a 4.0, then 55 to 59 points for a 3.7, and so on, up to 95 to 100 points for a 1.0.
