Biophysics

Become an all-rounder:in

"Bio" and "physics" form the bracket of what you can expect in your studies. The natural sciences of biochemistry and chemistry and, of course, mathematics are just as important for an in-depth understanding of biological systems. The term "system" refers to everything from biomolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, fatty acids) to cells and organisms. In Lübeck, the focus is on the molecular building blocks of life.

Teaching is always very close to research, which takes place on campus not only at the university's institutes but also at research centers such as the Center of Brain, Behavior and Metabolism (CBBM) and non-university research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Individualized and Cell-based Medical Engineering, the Leibniz Center for Medicine and Biosciences Borstel and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön.

Opinions of students

While you learn about the smallest building blocks of life, you yourself grow in big steps with the challenges of your studies

Janica von Dietman, 3rd semester Master

You become a polymath, one moment you're fiddling with physics questions, the next you're attending a biochemistry lecture.

Tina Dauksch, 2nd semester Bachelor

We are like interpreters between scientists, we know our way around all areas.

Finja, 4th semester Bachelor

We biophysicists stick together. But since we share many courses with other degree programs, we also make many friends outside of biophysics.

Wilhelm Krüger, 4th semester Bachelor

We are a smaller degree program, so the atmosphere is very informal. We always have a barbecue in summer and drink mulled wine in winter.

Nina, 4th semester Bachelor

The best of all natural sciences combined in one degree program, where you do a lot of interdisciplinary work.

Max, 4th semester Bachelor

Introducing the Biophysics degree program

Interdisciplinary

Current research in the field of life sciences, particularly at the molecular level, requires the interaction of various scientific disciplines. Physical methods are almost always involved. The Biophysics degree course therefore teaches interdisciplinary work in particular.

Familiar

With us, you will begin your studies at one of the smallest state universities in Germany. This enables excellent study conditions. Excellent teaching quality and student support are repeatedly confirmed by the CHE ranking. You will get to know each other quickly on the central campus.

Scientific

The Bachelor's degree program introduces you to current research in some areas so that you can be involved in current research projects in your Bachelor's thesis and work independently in the laboratory.

Laboratories

The university has state-of-the-art laboratories for molecular medical research, including laboratories with a high security level for handling dangerous pathogens, high-performance computing clusters for bioinformatics and systems biology

Campus

Biophysical methods are indispensable for all specialist disciplines that focus on medical progress and thus contribute directly or indirectly to improving the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. On the other hand, biophysical research provides fundamental insights into life processes that open up completely new ways of improving living conditions.

Region

You start your studies in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The old town is part of the UNSECO World Heritage Site and the beach on the Baltic Sea is only 20 km away. The infrastructural connections to Hamburg are also very good. University sports, music academy, theater, philharmonic orchestra: there is something for everyone in the cultural program.

Career prospects

With a Bachelor's degree, some graduates already enter the world of work. They find jobs in research institutions in the laboratory or in industrial companies in a wide variety of fields. However, a further Master's degree is strongly recommended.
The Master's degree enables both an academic career and entry into companies.
For a career at the university and in the research departments of companies, the Master's degree should be followed by a doctorate. All institutes at our university and our graduate school in Lübeck offer the best conditions for this.

Frequently asked questions

Not at the moment. However, this does not mean that studying biophysics is easier than other degree programs at our university that have admission restrictions.

The module handbooks provide an initial detailed overview of the degree program. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail or in person. We would also like to draw your attention to the Campus Day.

In science degree courses, a bachelor's degree is often followed by a master's degree and then a doctorate. Many of the graduates who work in industry work in the field of research.
