Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Medical informatics

Enabling medical innovations - with AI and medical data science

With a Master's degree, you are qualified for leading positions in companies and at the same time lay the foundation for an academic career at universities and research institutions. Your education will enable you to solve complex and interdisciplinary problems, organize and manage projects and consider ethical issues in your work.
During the course of your studies, you will acquire in-depth knowledge to apply the principles of medical informatics in different contexts. You will learn to assess their possibilities and limitations and to develop new, innovative models and concepts that promote the further development of the subject.

The Master's degree course in Medical Informatics offers you an exceptional number of options to specialize in the many different areas of Medical Informatics according to your personal interests. A particular focus is on artificial intelligence (AI), which will significantly shape and improve medical diagnostics and therapy in the future. You will be able to flexibly transfer and apply techniques, methods and concepts of medical informatics to new developments. Your training will also include the ability to work scientifically and collaborate successfully with colleagues from medicine and other disciplines. You will deal intensively with the possibilities and risks of using IT technology and will be able to present your well-founded opinions in a discursive manner.

Stays abroad at international universities or research institutions are possible for up to one year as part of the course without extending the duration of your studies.

Contents of the study program

In the Master's degree course in Medical Informatics, you have the freedom to set your own specialist focus. With a wide range of elective options, you can tailor your studies to your interests and deepen your knowledge in key areas of medical informatics.

Compulsory courses include advanced courses in eHealth, Medical Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Medical Image Processing - all key technologies for the future of digital medicine. In addition, you can deepen your knowledge and skills in elective modules according to your personal interests in these and other exciting topics of medical informatics or expand your informatics knowledge, for example in IT security, through in-depth informatics modules.

In addition, the Master's degree program teaches valuable interdisciplinary skills: you will learn about scientific publishing, deal with ethical issues in research and gain insights into entrepreneurial thinking - perfect if you are also interested in innovations and start-ups in the healthcare sector. In the Clinical Medicine course, you will also gain deeper insights into diagnostic and therapeutic processes.

Whether you are preparing for a scientific career, a career in industry or setting up your own company - the Master's degree program offers you the best conditions to actively shape your future in medical informatics.

A particular focus of the Master's degree course is on the practical application and independent development of IT solutions for the healthcare sector. This is why you will complete two extensive project internships in the third semester, which will give you valuable insights into research or industry. A wide range of opportunities are open to you: you can work in research laboratories, clinics or IT development departments both at the University of Lübeck and at external companies or institutions - in Germany and abroad.

Take the opportunity to gain international experience and complete a project internship at a foreign university or research institution - without losing time during your studies. Alternatively, you can opt for a project internship in a company and establish contacts with industry at an early stage. There are numerous medical informatics and medical technology companies, particularly in the vicinity of the University of Lübeck, with which the university cooperates closely.

This practice-oriented training continues in your Master's thesis: here too, you have the choice of working on an innovative research project at the university or working directly on real applications in a company's development department. In this way, you will gain valuable professional experience during your studies and prepare yourself optimally for your career in medical informatics.

Curriculum

All courses are listed in the recommended course of study. It indicates the semester in which a course should be attended.

Further information on the individual modules can be found in the Master's module handbook. There are links to these in the curriculum.

Application and admission

It is possible to apply for the Master's degree course in Medical Informatics in both the winter and summer semesters. The application period for the winter semester runs from May 1 to September 15. Applications for the summer semester can be submitted between November 15 and January 15. Applications are submitted via the application portal of the University of Lübeck.

Admission to the Master's degree course in Medical Informatics is restricted. A Bachelor's degree in Medical Informatics or a closely related subject is required as a qualification. All other admission requirements can be found in the course regulations.

In particular, we require extensive knowledge of computer science for admission, as you will need this in the Master's degree course and beyond, but we do not teach such skills in the Master's degree course.

The question of whether a particular Bachelor's degree is sufficient for admission to the Master's degree course in Medical Informatics can ultimately only be answered on an individual basis. There are simply too many Bachelor's degree courses, some of which are very different.

If you would like to find out whether we can admit you before submitting an official application, please send us an e-mail in good time with

  • your Bachelor's certificate or a current transcript of records, possibly supplemented by any (elective) modules you are still planning to take,
  • Links to the official websites of your degree program with curriculum, module handbook and examination regulations.

We can then inform you (before an official application without obligation) whether we can admit you and whether you may have to expect so-called "admission requirements".

If a few, isolated skills were not included in your Bachelor's degree course, but which we must require for admission, we may be able to admit you to the Master's degree course "subject to admission requirements". This means that you will have to catch up on individual, individually selected modules from our Bachelor's degree program in Medical Informatics parallel to the Master's degree program in order to be finally admitted to the Master's degree program in Medical Informatics.

Such admission requirements often lead to an extension of the Master's degree course by one semester, partly due to the individual scope of the requirements and partly because we cannot always optimize our timetables to meet such individual requirements. However, if there are no serious content-related dependencies between prerequisite and Master's modules, you can also take Master's modules right from the start.

In the following, we would like to show you some common constellations for orientation. Graduates of thematically broad-based medical informatics Bachelor's degree programs are almost always admitted without conditions. Graduates of pure computer science bachelor's degree programs or those with other applied subjects often lack content from the core area of medical informatics, but this can be made up for with admission requirements. This also applies in part to bachelor's degree programs related to medical technology if they contain significant computer science components. However, we have also been able to admit applicants from a wide variety of other Bachelor's degree courses, just ask us!
