Introducing the Medical Informatics degree program

IT - the engine of medical progress

Modern medicine is no longer conceivable without information technology. Whether personalized therapies, AI-supported diagnoses or digital patient files - medical informatics is driving innovation in diagnostics, therapy and administration.

Computer science studies

The Bachelor's degree in Medical Informatics provides you with a sound education in the application-oriented subjects of informatics. These form the basis for bringing information technologies into medicine.

Medical basics during your studies

In order to successfully apply IT solutions in medicine, it is crucial to understand medical issues and the perspective of doctors. Therefore, you will learn medical basics, such as anatomy or physiology, in lectures given by medical lecturers.

Mathematics - the foundation of computer science

Mathematics is an essential foundation of medical informatics. It is crucial for the further development of artificial intelligence and, for example, the evaluation of clinical studies in biostatistics - essential for the further development of medical technologies.

Unique range of courses in Lübeck

Our university Bachelor's and Master's degree courses are characterized by their thematic breadth and depth, making them unique in Germany. Small tutorial groups and personal contact with lecturers offer an ideal learning environment on a central campus.

Region

Career prospects

Medical informatics is a dynamically developing field in which key technologies of modern computer-aided medicine are developed for the benefit of patients and to support doctors and the healthcare system. There has been a high demand for medical informatics specialists on the job market for years. Due to the growing importance of information technology in modern medicine, it is expected that the demand for highly qualified IT specialists in IT companies, the healthcare sector and medical technology will continue to increase in the future.

The job market for medical IT specialists is large and diverse: they work for IT companies in the healthcare sector, hospitals, medical technology companies, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies or research institutes. They develop medical information systems, improve diagnostics or operation planning and execution, solve problems in data management or support research by analyzing and interpreting medical data. As medical informatics specialists with a focus on bioinformatics topics, you can help solve the diverse data processing problems in pharmaceutical research, from high-throughput screening to genome analysis and drug design. In addition, the training is so sound and versatile that you can also work as a computer scientist outside medicine.

Frequently asked questions

If you want to study "something with computer science" and are interested in medicine at the same time, studying medical informatics is just right for you. By focusing on medicine, you will always have in mind why and for whom you are developing innovative solutions - and that makes the work particularly satisfying and meaningful.
The tasks and fields of activity within medical informatics are extremely diverse. Of course, the development of IT solutions for the healthcare sector plays a central role, but there are also exciting career opportunities in hospitals, medical technology companies, the pharmaceutical industry or health insurance companies, for example.
The rapid advances in artificial intelligence will play a decisive role in shaping the medicine of the future - this requires experts in computer science who understand medical requirements and can work with doctors to develop solutions that really make a difference.

From the 4th semester onwards, you have a wide range of elective options with a total of 24 ECTS credits on the Bachelor's degree course. This allows you to choose your personal specialization or combine modules from different areas, depending on your interests.
In the Master's degree course, the options are even more extensive. From the first semester onwards, you have the freedom to choose from a wide range of electives that allow you to specialize in specific areas of medical informatics. One example of this flexibility is the third semester of the Master's degree, which consists of two internships lasting several months, which can be completed both at the university and at external research institutions and companies in Germany and abroad. These internships offer you the opportunity to further develop your specialization and gain valuable practical experience.

In contrast to general computer science, our focus is less on e.g. technical computer science, hardware development or chip design. Instead, we focus on the development of large and small software systems for the healthcare sector. Interdisciplinary knowledge is crucial here: Only those who understand the language and way of thinking of medical professionals can develop IT solutions that really work in practice. This understanding of both areas is the key to successful collaboration and makes medical IT specialists indispensable.

The University of Lübeck is the perfect place to study medical informatics: it combines strong informatics with an excellent medical environment. Thanks to modern university computer science, we offer a fully-fledged computer science degree with a special focus on artificial intelligence. At the same time, the close cooperation with the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein and the medical degree program enables direct contact with medical practice.

The close links between computer science and medicine are not only evident in teaching, but also in research: many institutes at the university are working on innovative solutions for the healthcare sector, from intelligent image processing to the analysis of medical data. This means you benefit from a degree course that directly integrates the latest scientific findings. There are very few places in Germany where you will find such a concentration of expertise at university level!

Lübeck is also a beautiful city with a maritime flair. With Travemünde right on the Baltic Sea, you have the sea almost on your doorstep. Others come here on vacation - you can live and study here!

Logical and analytical thinking, fun and perseverance when solving problems and a good understanding of mathematics are important foundations for studying medical informatics - just like in any informatics course. At the same time, the medical part requires the ability to memorize facts, sometimes only to understand connections afterwards. Different subjects mean different learning strategies - if you are flexible and enthusiastic about both, this is the right place for you!

You don't need to have any programming skills - you will learn this during your studies with us.
