We are looking for participants for an exciting study that investigates whether physiotherapeutic self-exercises via an app can help reduce the number of headache days.

Participation requirements:

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have a diagnosed migraine
  • or are willing to come to Schleswig-Holstein for the examination
  • You have been keeping a headache diary for at least 3 months

Why is the study being carried out?

Migraine is one of the most common diseases, affecting around 15% of people worldwide

Over 70% of people with migraine also suffer from neck pain.

Persistent stimuli from the neck area may trigger new attacks. For this reason, a study is to investigate whether app-based self-training, in addition to the usual medical care, can contribute to a reduction in the number of headache days per month.

It is assumed that the exercises lead to a reduction in muscle tension in the neck area and improved body awareness. This in turn could contribute to a reduction in the impairment caused by migraines and an improvement in self-efficacy

How does the study work?

In order to be able to manage the future care of migraine patients in a targeted and efficient manner, participating patients will be examined by trained physiotherapists using a study-based test compilation prior to participation.

If you would like to take part in the study, please contact the project team at the following e-mail address:

On first contact, you will be assigned a randomly generated four-digit number and given a link to the online survey of the questionnaires required for the study.

Once the inclusion and exclusion criteria have been checked, you will receive a list of participating trained therapists. You make an appointment for an examination with a therapist of your choice. After the examination, you will receive information on the exercises, which can be found in a separate section of the Kiel Pain Clinic's migraine app.

Have yourself examined by specially trained physiotherapists.

Perform neck exercises specially developed for people with migraines with the help of an app.

Be part of the project with the aim of creating a better range of care.

What is expected of me?

It is desirable that you do the exercises in the app regularly.

In order to be able to assess the effect of the exercises, we need fully completed questionnaires from all participating patients for all measurement points, if possible.
During the course of the study, we also need your headache diary every month for a total period of 6 months. In addition, you will be asked to complete a number of questionnaires after 3, 6 and 12 months, which will also serve to assess the effect of the exercises.

Who is conducting the study?

The study is being conducted jointly by the University of Lübeck (Prof. Dr. Kerstin Lüdtke), the Kiel Pain Clinic (Prof. Dr. Göbel) and the Institute of General Medicine at the UKSH (Prof. Dr. med. Jost Steinhäuser). Another project partner is the Techniker Krankenkasse.

The study is supported by funds from the Schleswig-Holstein Healthcare Security Fund.
