Course of studies, specific fields and terms:

  • Bachelor Interdisciplinary Courses for health sciences, optional suject, Interdisciplinary modules

Classes and lectures:

  • Culture and Communication of the Deaf (seminar, 2 SWS)

Workload:

  • 90 hours private studies
  • 30 hours in-classroom work

Contents of teaching:

  • Historical background to the suppression of the deaf as a marginalized social group
  • Basics of DGS (German Sign Language) and LBG (Signing with Speech)
  • Emergency communication with the deaf
  • Technology and possibilities of acoustic hearing systems and cochlear implants

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • Students can explain key cultural and social aspects of the deaf community.
  • Students can describe the basics of German Sign Language (DGS) and Signing to Accompany Speech (LBG).
  • Students can explain the indications, opportunities and limitations of acoustic hearing aids and cochlear implants.
  • Students can communicate appropriately with deaf patients in simple emergency situations.
  • Students can critically reflect on medical, ethical and social issues in dealing with deafness.
  • Students can categorize deafness as an expression of cultural diversity and consider the importance of barrier-free communication in everyday medical practice.
