- GW3270-S: Contested health? Theoretical, ethical and historical debates in the health sciences (seminar, 2 SWS)
Workload:

Contents of teaching:
- Fundamental ethical and theoretical debates in health and health care sciences
- Philosophical and sociological theories of illness and health, human images
- History of health concepts and health policy in a social context
- Current discussions about participation and diversity in the health care system, especially critiques of health norms by disability studies and interventions by queer feminist approaches.
- Discussions of concrete cases in professional practice
Qualification-goals/Competencies:
- Students are familiar with central ethical and theoretical debates in health and health care sciences (e.g., normative versus descriptive concepts of health, justice-based approaches versus health economics)
- They will be able to name current focal points of debate in the health care system and know in particular the criticism of racist and sexist forms of discrimination, approaches to disability as well as to sexual and gender diversity (LGBT*IQ)
- They know central concepts of historical, sociological and philosophical discourses on health (e.g. biopolitics or risk society).
- They can apply theories of and ethical positions on health to concrete cases from practice and discuss them critically
- They will be able to reflect on scientific literature on the above-mentioned range of topics and discuss it in the group
- They will acquire argumentative skills and competences in interdisciplinary discussion (health and health care sciences, philosophy, sociology, history, psychology)
