Duration
1 Semester
Turnus of offer
each winter semester
Credit points

Course of studies, specific fields and terms:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing 2020, compulsory, Evidence-based nursing practice
Classes and lectures:
- PF2512-V: Nursing Diagnostics and Interventions in Surgical care 1 (lecture, 2 SWS)
- PF2512-Ü: Evidence-based care for common health problems 2 (exercise, 1 SWS)
Workload:
- 45 hours in-classroom work
- 125 hours integrated internship hours
- 10 hours private studies
Contents of teaching:
- Nursing diagnostics (observation criteria and methods, assessment instruments, specialist terms from nursing and multi-professional classification systems, e.g. NANDA and ICF) for people in need of care of different ages with illnesses and health care needs of frequently occurring surgical clinical pictures from the medical specialities of general and visceral surgery, orthopaedics and traumatology
- Special care interventions for people in need of care at different ages, including existing evidence-based recommendations for action with the above-mentioned illnesses, particularly with regard to perioperative care and medium and long-term monitoring and self-care support (e.g. preoperative instruction and training, special care interventions to minimise postoperative symptoms (e.g. nausea, vomiting, shivering, pain, delirium, monitoring/handling of drainage tubes, thrombosis)
- Concepts and principles of rehabilitation in the above-mentioned medical fields, requirements for nursing care in the context of rehabilitation in the above-mentioned clinical pictures (especially follow-up treatment, geriatric traumatological rehabilitation)
- Evidence-based discharge management, including evaluation of post-inpatient support needs and prescription of relevant aids and medical devices
- Indications for as well as procedures and possible complications of special medical diagnostic and therapeutic measures that involve nursing participation tasks or medical tasks in preparation, implementation and/or follow-up observation/care (e.g. blood sampling, enteral and parenteral nutrition (therapy)), infusion therapy via different venous accesses, placement of peripheral venous accesses
Qualification-goals/Competencies:
- Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can describe special nursing interventions for pre- and post-operative monitoring and support of patients with regard to their indications, mechanisms of action and expected patient-relevant effects and potential adverse effects on the basis of current nursing and reference science findings.
- Broadening/deepening knowledge: Students can name evidence-based criteria and instruments for the assessment of post-inpatient care needs, including medical devices and aids, and describe the necessary processes and stakeholders to be involved (including those affected and their personal caregivers) for early discharge management, including the nursing prescription of medical devices and aids.
- Utilisation and transfer: Students can select and apply criteria and instruments for the assessment of nursing support needs in people with one of the frequently occurring surgical clinical pictures from the above-mentioned medical specialties (see course content) and interpret the assessment results appropriately.
- Utilisation and transfer: Students can plan evidence-based nursing interventions for people with one of the frequently occurring surgical clinical pictures from the above-mentioned medical specialties (see course content) in a professional and situation-specific manner, carry them out safely in nursing situations of moderate to high complexity and evaluate the safety and effectiveness of their implementation. This applies in particular to the prevention and minimisation of common post-operative symptoms and risks such as nausea, vomiting, shivering, pain, delirium, monitoring/handling of drains, thrombosis).
- Utilisation and transfer: Students are able to perform the following special medical tasks in the context of medical diagnostics and therapy with initial safety under supervision and on the basis of a doctor's order and are sensitised to possible complications or adverse events: Blood sampling, placement of peripheral venous catheters (pVC), preparation/application/follow-up of infusions and enteral and parenteral nutrition (therapy) via various types of intravenous access (pVC, port, CVC).
- Communication and cooperation: Students can assess the post-inpatient care needs of people with moderate to highly complex needs based on criteria and together with those affected and their carers and develop an action plan. They can identify all relevant stakeholders to be involved.
- Communication and cooperation: Students can formulate prescriptions for care-related aids and medical devices and initiate their implementation in cooperation with relevant stakeholders (funding organisations, medical supply stores, etc.).
- Scientific self-conception/professionalism: Students are able to recognise the need for extended independent curative tasks within the nursing process on a situation-specific basis and differentiate these from purely collaborative tasks within the framework of diagnostics and therapy.
