Study fund

Since the 2010/2011 winter semester, the University of Lübeck has been offering micro-financing as part of the Studienfonds gGmbH. The aim is to support students in closing financial gaps during their studies without exposing them to a high risk of debt.

The micro-grant is intended to help students continue their studies without unnecessary interruptions or delays.

Sponsored students undertake to make an income-related repayment to the study fund after successfully completing their studies. The amount of the contribution depends on the income earned and the degree obtained.

This creates a system of solidarity: those who earn more later on pay back a little more, thus enabling further students to be supported.

Reasons for setting up a study fund

  • On average, UzL students have €240 less per month than the national average.

  • 60 % work alongside their studies, which prolongs study times.

  • Only 3% of students nationwide receive scholarships - often from high-income families.

Advantages of a study fund

Advantages for students

  • Micro-financing in the event of financial bottlenecks without interrupting your studies.
  • Reduction of workload in favor of study progress.
  • Income-dependent repayment only from a certain income level.
  • Solidarity principle: those who earn more pay back more - for the benefit of future students.

Advantages for the university

  • Lower drop-out rate for financial reasons.
  • Students can concentrate more on their studies.
  • Faster completion of degree programs.
  • Stronger loyalty of graduates to their university.

Eligibility criteria, application and repayment modalities
