Contents of teaching:

  • Critical examination of the emergence/establishment of personality psychology.
  • tracing the fundamentally eugenic-racist history of (personality) psychology and intelligence research
  • Examination of
  • Examination of the structures of eugenics and scientific racism (networks, research funds, research work)
  • Examination of how academic psychology today deals (comes to terms?) with these issues
  • Tracing continuities of eugenic ideas into today's university structures/political right-wing groups/public discourses
  • Relevance of the confrontation with eugenics and racism for psychology and psychotherapy
  • You will be able to reflect on psychological practices in a way that is critical of racism

Qualification-goals/Competencies:

  • The students are familiar with central figures of personality psychology and their connections and classifications with regard to eugenics.
  • They can critically classify, evaluate and discuss the history of the research tradition
  • They are familiar with continuities that still exist today and can classify their relevance
  • You can name the role of psychology with regard to scientific racism and its social consequences.
  • They can draw connections to their own university education and critically reflect on the contents
